Handheld Computer Enhances Sniper Accuracy

Advanced ballistic computers that are paired with custom software are permitting shooters to score targets up to 2,500 yards or more.

Horus Vision of San Bruno, Calif., recently earned a second contract to provide more than a thousand of the systems to the Marine Corps. The Army earlier this year decided to acquire 6,500 devices.

The ballistic software, which can be adapted for different weapons, permits snipers to reverse model results. After firing their weapons, soldiers feed this data into the computer and it provides the means to achieve more precise calibration. Officials said the software was developed on information that was compiled by technicians at the Army’s Armament Research, Development and Engineering Center.
