An updated and vastly improved radar that can track enemy rocket, artillery and mortar fire in a full 360 degree panorama recently underwent successful testing at the Army’s Yuma Proving Ground in Arizona.
The prototype was designed by Syracuse Research Corp. for Lockheed Martin’s enhanced AN/TPQ-36 counter-fire target acquisition radar.
It is expected to replace counter-fire radars that were developed during the Cold War, which operate only in limited 90 degree modes.
The Army has ordered five of the target acquisition radars that are to be delivered within the next three years. Ultimately, as many as 180 radars may be purchased under a contract that could be worth as much as $1.6 billion.
