Tear, Puncture: The Panels Still Light Up
Edited by Robert H. Williams
A partnership between the Natick Soldier Center in Natick, Mass., and Crosslink of St. Louis, Mo., has yielded electroluminescent panels for troops in the field. The lightweight and flexible panels provide plenty of white illumination and they are durable, says Benjamin LaPointe, Natick project officer.
The panels, he explains, “can be attached to tent walls, and the lighting can be collapsed with the shelter so that troops don’t have to come back and get them later.”
They will replace fluorescent lights that must be transported in a hardened container. Additionally, these lights are heavier and rely on toxic materials. They also are difficult to turn on in cold weather.
