Weight-in-Motion Tester Scrutinized
Edited by Robert H. Williams
A portable military vehicle weight-in-motion system has been pioneered by the computational sciences and engineering division of Tennessee’s Oak Ridge National Laboratory. The hardware and software automatically identify the equipment, determines the individual axle weights, distance between axles, total vehicle weight, profile and center of balance as the vehicle passes over the weighing pads.
Human error in conjunction with currently operated systems may yield an error rate of 14 percent. But this technology has demonstrated zero percent error and excellent consistency, says a lab spokesman, who adds the system may have application for the Department of Homeland Security.
Testing began at Fort Eustis, Va., Fort Lewis, Wash., and will be pursued at several other cites.
