‘Black Waffle’ Saves Pallets in Combat Zone
A relatively inexpensive low-density hexane copolymer that is molded into an 82-inch by 10-inch by 8-inch rectangle is being used as an equipment pallet that is subsequently loaded on a $1,700 pallet and net system.
A rather superfluous fix, one might surmise.
The U.S. Transportation Command opted for the apparently redundant system to prevent troops from commandeering the more expensive cargo platforms for tent floors and other uses.
Now, when supplies are moved on the ground, they ride on the cheaper polymer slabs. The metal pallets and nets remain on the air transport.
Officials predict when full production is reached these “black waffle” pallets will cost about $400.
