Training curbs combat skid mishaps

TrainingCurbThe Army’s Tank Automotive Research, Development and Engineering Center’s national automotive center and General Motors are working to curb injuries and deaths caused by skid driving conditions in Iraq and Afghanistan.

The upshot is the integration of skid platform technologies on a standard humvee that permits soldiers to experience a 60 miles per hour skid in a vehicle that is only going 15 miles per hour.

Mike Barkstall, of the Army’s safe drivers program, points out that a skid training device offers the potential of training drivers before they are deployed and, thus, reducing vehicle rollovers in theater.
