Mini Device Pinpoints Nuclear Threats

Edited by Robert H. Williams

MiniDevice

A pager-sized device that has been introduced by Thermo Electron of Waltham, Mass., not only detects and identifies specific nuclear threats, but also transmits this information in real time to command centers. The device produces both a digital depiction and audio description of the event.

The Interceptor, developed by Target Instruments of Oak Ridge, Tenn., combines both a personal radiation detector and a radiation isotope identifier device in a single hand-held unit.
