LONDON -- In anticipation of declining military spending in Europe, defense industry giant EADS is branching out into the homeland security market, company officials said here at the DSEi international arms show.

EADS -- European Aeronautic Defense and Space Company -- is pursuing homeland security contracts particularly in the United Kingdom, said Alan Godwin, chief executive officer of EADS Defense and Security Systems Ltd. based in Newport, South Wales.

This division of EADS for years has provided secure communications systems and IT network services to the U.K. Ministry of Defence. But with defense budgets expected to remain flat or slightly decline, the company is seeking new customers for its commercial equipment and services in homeland defense and other government programs where it perceives growth in the coming decade, he told National Defense.

London is hosting the 2012 Olympics and the United Kingdom will host a large number of global sporting events, such as World Cup games, during the next few years.

“There’s a whole market that opens up there for us,” he says.

One immediate application for the company's network technologies is in emergency services such as fire response and rescue.
