Observation Telescopes Help Snipers Score More Hits

2,009

By Robert H. Williams

Marine Corps snipers are expected to become a bit more accurate thanks to new equipment.

They are to receive a tripod mounted, mil-dot spotting scope that dovetails with a handheld ballistic computer the Marines recently acquired. (The mil in mil-dot is a shortening of the term milliradian). Sniper rifles have mil-dots on both horizontal and vertical crosshairs so they can measure height as well as width through their scopes.

Both the Scout Sniper Observation Telescope and the ballistic computers were developed by Horus Vision of San Bruno, Calif.
The new scope will replace the M49 20x power fixed telescope that has been in service since 1952.
