A Zamboni for ship decks? Odd as it sounds, it’s quickly becoming reality.
Already successfully tested by the Navy, the Mobile Cleaning Reclaim and Recovery System, or MCRRS, looks more at home on a hockey rink than on an aircraft carrier. The truck-like device was developed to clean grime off of ships’ decks, work that usually requires legions of sailors to accomplish.
The MCRRS uses no soap, and only pressurized fresh water. Everything from oil, fuel and loose bolts on deck can be vacuumed up into the MCRRS. Oil and other hazardous materials are separated out into waste concentrates so they can be properly disposed of, while the water can be recycled for cleaning.
Developed by the Office of Naval Research, Naval Sea Systems Command and the Naval Surface Warfare Center, Carderock, the MCRRS has been tested this year on the USS Abraham Lincoln and the USS Bonhomme Richard.
