
Enough with the bashing of the U.S. shipbuilding industry, complained Adm. Gary Roughead, chief of naval operations. “People have been saying American shipbuilding is broken. I take exception to that,” he said in a speech at the Naval War College in Newport, R.I. “Innovation is taking place” at the nation’s shipyards, said Roughead. He cited the Austal USA shipyard in Mobile, Ala., which is assembling one of the Navy’s new littoral combat ships. Roughead complimented the facility for its state-of-the-art technology.
It was built by the same companies that designed assembly plants for auto giants Toyota and Nissan.
