An improved humvee gun turret that went from conception to production in six months is offering combat soldiers greater protection from improvised explosive devices and small arms fire, while offering enhanced situational awareness.
The shield features a combination of steel and transparent armor. Now in mass production at Army depots, the turrets were conceived by engineers at Picatinny Arsenal, N.J., and troops who had recently returned from Iraq and Afghanistan.
The modular kits comprise a turret, gun shield and all that is needed to install the gear on a humvee by troops in the field.
