A Hawaii-based company is providing a reusable, low-cost alert system for pilots and submarine crews that can be seen from the air, day or night. The reflective streamers can be detected by the naked eye from an altitude of 3,000 feet and a distance of up to three miles.
The retro-reflective streamers are designed to replace flares, smoke, dye markers and electric lights that have only limited, effective signaling capabilities.
A spokesman for Rescue Technologies Corp. also notes that unlike current rescue alert devices, the streamers are non-polluting and are not hampered by a limited shelf life.
