Firefighters
are the intended recipients of a tire-protection system from Pierce
Manufacturing Inc. of Appleton, Wis., that senses tire pressure
and temperature. A wheel-position indicator and audible alarm in
the cab warns drivers of looming problems.
Also part of the system is a tire-protection blowout band that
helps keep fire and rescue vehicles on the road and in control.
The band locks the damaged tire to the rim. This cushion of rubber,
a spokesman explains, allows the driver to navigate safely over
most surfaces including rain or snow-covered roads.
