A possible replacement for the military’s venerable Humvee
may spring from a concept vehicle that was developed by the Georgia
Research Institute with funding from the Office of Naval Research.
Called the ultra armored patrol vehicle, it is the brainchild of
commercial designers and engineers.
Powered
by a diesel engine, the patrol vehicle is sheathed in lightweight
armor that offers protection against mines and improvised explosive
devices. A suite of onboard computers integrates the steering, suspension
and brakes.
Giving the armored patrol truck considerable spunk were suggestions
from NASCAR and other automotive racing experts.
