A new handheld communications device—the Personal Network Radio or PNR-500—permits
tactical commanders to conduct wireless conferencing, according to the manufacturer,
Tadiran Communications. “It allows any three soldiers to simultaneously
transmit to unlimited listeners,” a company spokesman said.
The full duplex radio has an emergency function that enables a soldier to break
in with an urgent message, such as the identification of a hostile target. It
has 15 preset frequency channels, and a dynamic network architecture option
will give up to 60 units the ability to pursue separate and independent combat
missions.
The radio supports data communications, live video, advanced encryption, embedded
or external global positioning system location and Bluetooth wireless headsets.
