A novel cartridge inspection system that examines the primary components of
a bullet—casing, primer, projectile and gunpowder—also can evaluate
and discard faulty ammo at rates exceeding 25,200 an hour.
Built by General Inspection, LLC, of Davisburg, Mich., the system, using a
combination of cameras and a multi-beam proprietary laser, searches for surface
flaws, proper size, primer fit and weight of individual cartridges.
Defective ammunition is shunted off the assembly line.
Officials noted that this just-developed technique requires a fraction of the
floor space and offers more accurate inspection at two to three times the speed
of traditional systems.
A comparable system produced by the company inspects and sorts bolts and screw
machine parts.
