Commando Solo is a specially modified EC-130E designed to conduct
psychological operations broadcasts in the standard AM, FM, HF,
television and military communications bands.
The aircraft can transmit in a frequency range of 450 KHz to 1000
MHz and is capable of broadcasting at a maximum power output of
10 kilowatts in MF, HF and television band widths. It also can produce
one kilowatt output in the VHF range.
Armed with audio-cassette recorders, 10-inch reel-to-reel recorders,
1/2 inch VHS and 3/4 inch U-matic video-cassette recorders, realtime
relay of received signals, noise modulators and aircrew microphones,
Commando Solo can provide an airborne broadcast platform for virtually
any contingency, Army officials said.
Typically, a mission includes one orbit high above the desired
target audience. Missions are flown at the maximum altitude possible,
officials explained, to ensure optimum propagation patterns.
