Help Is on the Way For Navy Flacks

The Navy is soon expected to award a multimillion-dollar contract to a major PR agency to help the service deal with an onslaught of media attention. According to the PR Daily newsletter, the Navy put out an S.O.S. for outside help this summer after its own media-relations office at the Pentagon decided it could no longer handle the ballooning workload — news media, TV, movies, blogs, YouTube, MySpace.

Hollywood can be particularly demanding. A case in point: Tinseltown’s heavy hitters were in Hawaii recently during a major maritime exercise. A film crew working on the “Transformers” sequel wanted aerial footage of the entire 35-ship flotilla of U.S. and allied forces. After some haggling, the Navy approved the shot.
