A variety of Air Force and National Guard fixed-wing aircraft and helicopters are benefiting from software that is making possible on-board, integrated defensive avionics systems. Providing these specialized applications are engineers from the Georgia Tech Research Institute.
The software meshes radars, missile warning sensors, signal jamming devices and other defensive systems.
The arrays are being used on Air Force C-130 Hercules transports and MH-53 helicopters. Air Guard aircraft include F-16s and A-10 Warthogs.
“Our work first involves situational awareness, to make sure that aircraft avoid the areas where they could be engaged by missiles or anti-aircraft guns, and the second part involves assisting the crew in employing countermeasures to protect itself,” a GTRI research engineer explains.
